Meet Jessica Hawkins

Jessica Hawkins is an educator, school leader, and researcher committed to designing liberatory learning experiences rooted in culture, nature, and joy. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, a certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies, a Master of Social Work, and an Ed.S. in school leadership. She is currently a third-year Ph.D. student in Curriculum and Instruction at UNC Charlotte with a specialization in urban education.

With more than 13 years of experience as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, and principal, Jessica’s work centers the brilliance of Black children and communities. Her research explores the intersections of outdoor learning, play, and culturally sustaining pedagogy as pathways to liberation, particularly in urban educational spaces. She is passionate about challenging traditional curriculum models and building environments where children are free to think critically, explore deeply, and grow in community.

She has recently launched Kin & Canopy, an initiative designed to increase Black families’ engagement in outdoor experiences and shared play. The project also focuses on developing culturally responsive and culturally sustaining curriculum materials that reflect the richness of Black traditions in nature-based education.

Whether she is guiding future teachers, cultivating nature-based learning, or amplifying joy as a practice, her work reflects a deep commitment to justice, imagination, and belonging.
