Frequently Asked Questions
What is UAL?
Ujima Academy for Liberation (UAL) is a supplemental learning collaborative that offers a micro-school experience for homeschooled children in grades 2–5.
Is UAL a school?
UAL is not a school. We work alongside current and prospective homeschool families to enrich their child(ren)’s learning experiences. We provide a means of collaboration and empowerment for families. We center literacy, math, and cultural empowerment through nature and joy. We supplement learning that is already existing at home.
What is the weekly schedule?
Our main program operates Monday-Thursday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Do you have a drop-in program?
We are exploring drop-in opportunities for families of multiple age ranges. If interested, use the contact page to get on our mailing list. You’ll be notified of events, dates, costs, anything else to help you decide if you’d like to drop-in with us.
How do I know if UAL is right for my family?
UAL has many components that make it a robust collaborative. Families that decide to journey with us believe in partnership, which will help us strength the collective community. Our scholars will see themselves reflected in a curriculum that reflects and celebrates them. And we will use the beauty and freedom of nature to spark and sustain joy. Our families understand that our values are immovable and honor the resilience of the Black diaspora. We are a community which means that all won’t be perfect and we don’t expect it. However, we are responsive, adaptable, and deeply reflective.
Why are you only serving grades 2-5?
Our program’s current iteration works best for scholars at this particular developmental stage. We’re excited about exploring learning and engagement opportunities for other grade levels, so keep in touch with us to find out when they become available.
What does nature-inclusion mean?
We’ll use nature to integrate the natural world into the learning process, emphasizing environmental stewardship and outdoor education. Nature and green spaces have been traditionally viewed as white-dominant spaces and we’re on a mission to reclaim nature as a right, not a privilege.
What is included in the program cost?
Our program is uniquely designed to be unlike most. The fees cover the costs associated with program operations. The cost covers rent for our learning space, program supplies, liability insurance, and field trips. The founding team does not receive any money from fees. We are parents of UAL scholars, too, and are financially committed to its success.
If you have other questions, message us using the contact form. We’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
